The GWHS Dance Company is a lively place for creativity, offering students the chance to explore various dance styles from jazz to ballet. With classes made for all levels, this company not only helps students improve their skills but also builds a strong community among dancers.
At GWHS, the dance company is an important part of the arts curriculum, encouraging students to express themselves through movement. Led by Nina Mayer, the Director of Dance, the program aims to showcase different dance forms while teaching students about their cultural roots.
Students can dive into styles like hip-hop, contemporary, and even world dances. “Learn a variety of cultural dances in order to embrace the diversity within our classroom and the world at large” as explained on the GWHS Dance Company website. This approach helps build both talent and appreciation for the art.
Jamie Low, a senior in the GWHS Dance Company, joined the program as a sophomore and focuses on ballet. She got her start in dance at a young age when her parents noticed her walking on her toes. “I was around four when they signed me up for classes,” she shared.
Jamie told an important moment from last year’s dance concert. “During a duet, I struggled with a tough turn sequence. But in the final show, I nailed it! My friends were backstage cheering me on, and that support meant everything,” she said. Such experiences show how important community is within the dance company.
Staying motivated during tough rehearsals can be a challenge. Jamie highlights looking forward to the performance. “I think about how rewarding it will feel once we get it right, and I treat myself afterward,” she said with a smile.
Collaboration is a key part of the program. Dancers frequently work in small groups to create and fix choreography. “I find a lot of inspiration online or from live shows. Dance is everywhere; you just have to notice it,” Jamie said. What Jamie loves most about the dance company is the sense of friendship. “I’ve made so many friends here, and we support each other. It makes dancing so much more enjoyable,” she explained. This supportive atmosphere really helps during performances, where students showcase their hard work and passion.
The program also teaches valuable lessons about fitness and injury prevention, ensuring that dancers stay healthy while showcasing their art. Jamie hopes to double major in dance and marketing in college, showing how the program prepares students for the future.
The GWHS Dance Program is more than just a place to learn dance; it’s a community that creates talent and friendship. As students like Jamie Low prepare for their performances, they not only grow as dancers but also create lasting memories and connections. With such a solid foundation, the future of dance at GWHS looks incredibly bright.
