From fun bake sales to concerts, students at George Washington High School are finding creative ways to fund the activities they love. These fundraisers not only raise funds but also unite the school community, fueling school spirit and enhancing student life.
The Importance of Fundraising
Student clubs and music programs like guitar and choir are vital to the high school experience, offering opportunities for students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build relationships. Clubs range from academic organizations to special interest groups, while music programs include choir, guitar, band, and orchestra. However, with limited school budgets, these programs rely on outside financial support to cover the costs of events, equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
Anna Karney, a guitar and choir teacher at Washington, emphasizes the importance of fundraisers: “We have to buy gowns, we have to buy tuxedos, and you have to buy it every year, so it’s an ongoing thing of purchases.” Fundraising ensures that all students and parents can participate fully without financial barriers that would otherwise limit access to resources and activities.
Fundraising Efforts
At Washington, student-led initiatives come in various forms, each designed to engage students and the wider community. Some popular events include bake sales, clothing drives, and concerts, which not only raise money but also give students a platform to showcase their skills and creativity. For example, the upcoming winter concert for choir and guitar students features performances with ticket sales, generating significant funds that directly support music coaches and the purchase of materials for guitar and choir.
Sophia Choi, the founder and president of Decorating for All Club, shares how fundraisers for her club have helped create fun and engaging activities. “We held a Valentine’s Day bake sale with pipe cleaner flowers and baked goods,” Choi says. “It was an affordable option for students to give to their friends, and it brought smiles and happiness to everyone.”
Engaging the Community
Fundraisers at Washington do more than raise money; they also build a sense of inclusiveness within the school community. These events not only attract students, guardians, teachers, and residents but create an environment where everyone can come together to support the students' efforts. “Teachers, staff, and parents have really contributed a lot to past and present events,” Karney says.
In addition to fostering school spirit, these activities also let students enjoy their time while learning important life skills. Planning and executing fundraising events requires teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
Overcoming Obstacles
However, organizing fundraisers comes with its own set of challenges. Students and teachers often juggle multiple tasks, including classes, homework, and extracurricular activities. Planning events can also be time-consuming and stressful, especially when trying to balance these commitments. Washington students remain dedicated to their fundraising efforts.
Karney also emphasizes the challenges students face when balancing academics, extracurriculars, and fundraising efforts. "If the students have so much on their plate already to keep the energy going, it is the real sort of mountain that you have to climb," she explains. Despite these obstacles, the dedication and persistence of students are what keep these programs and fundraisers alive.
Karney also encourages students to stay motivated. "I just have to keep reminding the students to stay on it. But every day, every other day, I'm asking the students to reach out to friends, to family, to teachers," she says.
The Impact of Fundraising
Events at Washington are more than just fundraisers; they are necessary for the growth and success of student clubs and music programs. Engaging the school community and creating memorable experiences ensure that all students have the chance to pursue their passions and interests to make the most of their high school experience.
