It's everyone's favorite time of year! Air getting crisper, movies getting scarier, pumpkin spice lattes breaking everyone's wallet. Fall is a favorite season for many, thanks to the unique comfort and nostalgia it brings. Each season has its traditions, and for fall, “Gilmore Girls” is a show that gets a lot of attention. The values of fall, warmth, togetherness, and change are brought to life in the show, making it a perfect watch during this time of year.
The 2000s popular show “Gilmore Girls" gained millions of viewers even to this day. Some argue that it's doing better now than it did when it originally came out. “Gilmore Girls” is known for the comedic dialogue, entertaining characters, and dramatic plots. As journalist Arantza Garcia from the Johns Hopkins Newsletter explains, "’Gilmore Girls’ is a fall show, built for changing seasons and that strange transitional period that marks autumn." “Gilmore Girls” provides the comfort, fall, and nostalgic vibes due to the hot drinks, emotional comfort, music, and fall aesthetic.
Fall is known to be everyone's favorite season, and for the “Gilmore Girls" director, it is the same for them too! Seven seasons, 153 episodes, and 115 hours of the show, and about 70% of it is filmed during the fall. Main characters Lorelai and Rory Gilmore are known to be coffee, fashion, and food obsessed, and it is well represented in each episode. Coffee is a staple during the fall; their obsession with the drink mirrors the fall traditions and coziness we all love and also crave when we see them drinking it! The fashion reflects the 2000s style plus additional glitz and unique glam the Gilmore girls like to add to each outfit. “I love their style; it's so vintage and casual; they inspire a lot of the fashion trends in this generation,” states a high school student who's watched all seven seasons four times. Their outfits correlate with their small town and stand out next to the fall leaves. They wear basic autumn colors, but Lorelai always makes sure to either add a sparkly sweater, juicy couture pants, or cowboy boots here and there. The fashion industry gets many excited to dress up for the fall season.
Speaking of the small town, the fictional town of Stars Hollow is almost a character itself. The small town presents a charm and family-oriented area along with the beautiful autumn breeze. Stars Hollow is vibrant, and the main episodes have funky small town events such as hay rides, fireworks festivals, the annual dance marathon, bid-a-basket, and much more. It seems that fall is year-round in the show until winter comes, which is known because of Lorelai's iconic “I smell snow.” The traditions, events, and decorations the town does are almost equivalent to how your grandma celebrates when you come visit for Thanksgiving. The warmth and coziness of Stars Hollow make it feel like a place you want to visit over and over again. With all its fun traditions and seasonal events, the town gives off a comforting, nostalgic vibe, kind of like going to your grandma’s house for Thanksgiving. “I only watch ‘Gilmore Girls’ during the fall because the vibes of upstate New York that serves fall time and also the small town traditions give me a certain comfort in a way,” says Shapiro. Just like the never-ending fall, Stars Hollow always feels like home, welcoming, and familiar.
“Gilmore Girls” is one of the biggest shows for a reason. It cemented itself as a fall favorite that offers much warmth and coziness the season is known for. The many cups of coffee, unique fashion, and cozy traditions motivate the viewers to start a tradition to watch the show at the start of every fall season.
